Powerful Climate Insights from Global Sustainability Forum

I had the privilege of representing Hyphen SCS and speaking at the 4th International Conference on “Transforming Minds, Transforming Earth: Education and Climate Action for Sustainable Living” held at Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Delhi.
The conference brought together thought leaders, educators, researchers, and industry experts to discuss how education, innovation, and responsible leadership can drive meaningful climate action and sustainable living. 🌍
During my session, I spoke about the broader emphasis of the Paris Climate Agreement — which calls for holding global temperature rise well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
I highlighted what these targets mean in practical terms, what is realistically achievable, and why even a half-degree difference between 1.5°C and 2°C is not small — it is transformational for the planet.
For instance, limiting warming to 1.5°C instead of 2°C could reduce exposure to severe heatwaves from 37% of the world’s population to about 14%, showing how a small temperature change dramatically affects human lives.
Similarly, preventing that extra half degree could save up to 420 million people from frequent extreme heat exposure and millions more from sea-level rise impacts.
I also discussed the impact on oceans, ecosystems, and biodiversity:
Coral reefs may decline 70–90% at 1.5°C, but over 99% could be lost at 2°C.
Arctic sea ice-free summers could occur once every 100 years at 1.5°C, but once every decade at 2°C.
At 2°C warming, 18% of insects, 16% of plants, and 8% of vertebrates are projected to lose more than half their habitat ranges — significantly higher than at 1.5°C.
Sea levels could rise higher and expose tens of millions more people to coastal flooding if warming reaches 2°C.
I emphasized that what appears as “just half a degree” for us translates globally into rising sea levels, melting ice caps, intensified heatwaves, stressed rainforests, species loss, and heightened risks to food and water security. Scientists stress that even small increments in warming sharply increase climate risks and feedback effects.
My objective was to provide students with a practical, data-driven perspective — making the discussion introspective and thought-provoking.
Because climate change is not a distant concept; it is a measurable shift that affects infrastructure, supply chains, economies, and everyday life.
Engaging with students, scholars, and fellow speakers made the experience truly enriching and reaffirmed my belief that transforming minds is the first step toward transforming our planet.
A big thank you to Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies Technical Campus for organizing such a meaningful Global Sustainability Forum.🙏
