Reconnecting with Raman Roy Sir, Father of Indian BPO, at TiE-Delhi NCR Mentorship

Father of Indian BPO
Full Circle Moments 🙏 | Meeting the Father of Indian BPO 🇮🇳
Had the privilege of reconnecting with Raman Roy sir while representing Hyphen SCS at the TIE Gold Mentorship session hosted by TiE Delhi-NCR at the MakeMyTrip HQ in Gurugram.
Our paths first crossed 13 years ago at the CNBC Young Turks Awards 2012, where I, then a budding student and E-cell coordinator from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, had the honor of meeting him as part of the delegate team. During that interaction, I handed him my business card, and he politely accepted it, then gave me his in return.
What followed next has remained etched in my memory ever since.
I instinctively took the card with one hand and tucked it into my pocket without looking — a rookie move from a student unaware of business etiquette.
Raman sir gently corrected me:
“When someone, especially a senior, gives you a card, accept it with both hands. Read it. Acknowledge it. Only then, once they leave, keep it away.”
That moment taught me more than a dozen business books ever could.
And since then, I’ve shared this lesson with hundreds of students and young professionals.
Fast forward to today: no longer a student, but an entrepreneur building Hyphen SCS into a globally recognized warehousing platform — yet still learning from legends like Raman sir.
For those who don’t know:
Raman Roy is the pioneer of the Indian BPO industry — fondly known as the Father of BPO in India.
Over 35+ years, he has led transformational roles at American Express, GE (Genpact), Spectramind (Wipro BPO) and then founded Quatrro, driving outsourcing from India onto the world stage.
His leadership has directly created 35,000+ jobs and impacted over 1 million livelihoods.
He is a founding member of the IAN Group (formerly Indian Angel Network), sits on the board of Invest India, has mentored 20+ startups, and served on numerous national committees including nasscom, Confederation of Indian Industry, ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India), and SIDBI’s Fund of Funds VCIC.
Recognitions? Too many to count — from the IAOP Hall of Fame, BBC Game Changers, Dataquest Pathbreaker, to Digital Leader of the Year by IACC.
A humble visionary. A mentor’s mentor. A nation-builder.
Forever grateful for this moment of reconnection and learning.
🙏 Thank you, Raman sir, for your time, guidance, and grace.
